New Hampshire SSM Repeal Vote!

Out-of-state billionaires used their fortunes to force same-sex marriage on the people of New Hampshire. But when voters had their say, an electoral landslide reset the legislature, forcing legislators to listen to their constituents and creating an opportunity to repeal the same-sex marriage regime.

On February 1st, the New Hampshire legislature will vote on a bill that would repeal same-sex marriage, restoring the definition of marriage and reinstating the civil unions compromise that was approved by the legislature in 2007.

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support House Bill 437, restoring the definition of marriage in New Hampshire.

Two years ago, out-of-state billionaires bankrolled a campaign to force same-sex marriage on our state. After days of backroom dealing and high pressure arm-twisting, the legislature narrowly approved a bill to redefine marriage, and Governor Lynch signed it into law -- despite earlier promises to the contrary.

But New Hampshire voters never asked for same-sex marriage, and are tired of being ignored in Concord. In the 2010 elections, when voters finally had a chance to be heard, we hit the reset button, sending an overwhelming message about the change needed on many issues, including the restoration of marriage as the union of a husband and wife.

House Bill 437 is a common-sense bill. Forty-four other states recognize marriage as the union of a husband and wife. Voters have ratified constitutional amendments protecting marriage in 31 states already, usually by overwhelming margins. HB 437 is a reasonable compromise that would restore the definition of marriage, while at the same time providing civil unions available to all couples and keeping existing same-sex marriages intact.
