As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to vote no on LD 1020, the same-sex marriage legislation being considered by the Senate.

For millennia, marriage has been the way that societies, across all cultural, ethnic and religious lines, have connected children to their own mothers and particularly fathers. This is a fundamental role of marriage which ought not be changed lightly.

Already, the recognition of same-sex marriage and civil unions has threatened the civil rights of religious groups opposed to same-sex marriage, as exemptions prove far to thin for the realities of modern life. Boston Catholic Charities has been deprived of its adoption license; a Methodist group has been denied tax exemption for refusing to permit a civil union ceremony on its property in New Jersey. And this is just the tip of what is sure to be a much larger iceberg.

The American people have consistently and repeatedly voted against same-sex marriage. If adopted by the legislature, I am certain this measure will be rejected by the people of Maine as well.

I urge you to respect the voice of your constituents. I urge you to protect marriage and vote no on the same-sex marriage bill.
