After the New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly approved the same-sex marriage bill, in early December, the bill's sponsors temporarily withdrew the bill, concerned they didn't have the votes for passage.

Reports now indicate that the full Senate vote is expected to vote on the measure on Thursday, January 7, 2010, just days before the end of the lame duck legislative session.

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the same-sex marriage bill being voted on this week. I am especially disturbed by the lack of respect some senators are showing for the religious liberties of religious believers and institutions. The amendment added in committee is nothing more than a sham.

Already, we've seen religious groups denied property tax exemption because they refused to deny their core religious beliefs about marriage. And if we redefine marriage, scholars tell us that the conflicts will only increase.

The amendment approved by the Judiciary Committee last month does nothing to solve those problems. Rather, it shows a fundamental disrespect for people of faith, deceptively making a show of concern while offering no substantive protections at all.

If same-sex marriage was too controversial to debate and pass during an election year, it is simply wrong to push it through under the radar, after the election, when voters aren't paying attention.

It has only been two years since civil unions provided all the benefits of marriage for same-sex couples in New Jersey. Now activists are trying to push through same-sex marriage, after the election to avoid public accountability.

These sorts of games have gone on in Trenton for too long already. Vote no on same-sex marriage.
