Governor Douglas just vetoed the same-sex marriage bill, and the House and Senate are expected to attempt to override the veto on Tuesday, April 7.

As your constituent and as an American concerned about the future of our nation, I urge you to vote no on the same-sex marriage bill (S.115) recently vetoed by Governor Douglas.

For millennia, marriage has been the way that societies, across all cultural, ethnic and religious lines, have connected children to their own mothers and particularly fathers. This is a fundamental role of marriage which ought not be changed lightly.

The American people have consistently and repeatedly voted against same-sex marriage, and Vermont voters sent a similar message after the adoption of civil unions a decade ago.

The proposed legislation is also troubling because of the lip service which it pays to religious liberty protections, while offering no substantive protection at all. While protecting the right of ministers to not perform same-sex ceremonies, it does nothing to address the day-to-day conflicts which arise when religious individuals and organizations participate in the public sphere.

I urge you to respect the voice of your constituents. I urge you to protect marriage and vote no on the same-sex marriage bill.
