Indiana Marriage Amendment

The Indiana marriage amendment was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 23rd on a 7-3 party line vote. The amendment now goes to the full Senate for final approval this year.

While the House Democrats are out of state, the Senate is still in session. With just a month left in this year's legislative session, the Senate needs to take action now to ensure that marriage is protected in Indiana.

I am writing to urge your support for HJR 6, the Indiana marriage amendment recently approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate has overwhelmingly supported this measure in previous years, and now that it has been passed by the House, I urge you to support its prompt passage by the full Senate.

The measure is simple, straightforward, and patterned after measures that have been adopted and tested by our neighbors in Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Marriage is too important to be left in the hands of three unelected judges on the Indiana Supreme Court. And we can't afford to wait any longer. Opponents say that our law alreayd protects against same-sex marriage -- the same thing they said in Iowa until the state supreme court forced same-sex marriage on the people of that state.

It takes years to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot. It's the job of our elected officials to anticipate the need and be proactive, not wait until the courts get it wrong, and then try to mitigate the damage.

Thirty other states have already adopted similar measures, and the list of hypothetical abuses continually raised by opponents has yet to materialize anywhere.

The time to act is now. Don't wait for the courts to get it wrong. Don't open the door for same-sex marriage in the future.
