Less than six months before the midterm elections, Democrats in Congress are pushing a dangerous new bill that would limit the political speech of 501(c)(4) groups like NOM, and require public disclosure of their donors.

The bill passed the House last month, and is now up for a vote in the Senate, where the Democratic leadership needs at least one Republican vote in order to defeat the Republicans' threatened filibuster.

I am writing as your constituent, urging you to oppose the DISCLOSE Act.

This piece of legislation goes far beyond an attempt to limit the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United, allowing corporations to contribute to political campaigns – it strikes at the very heart of political speech and the longstanding right of individuals to donate to 501(c)(4) advocacy groups without fear of reprisal.

And as if the bill itself weren’t bad enough – likely even unconstitutional – reports of special treatment for the NRA and labor unions is fundamentally unfair and discriminatory toward smaller organizations.

Finally, I understand that the bill may come to the floor for a vote as early as this week. Surely the American people are not even aware of the bill, much less have they had a chance to review and comment. Rushing this bill through Congress only reinforces the perception that this bill is less about campaign finance reform, and more about political retribution and under-the-table deals.

For these reasons, I urge you to vote NO on the DISCLOSE Act.
