As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to vote NO on the same-sex marriage bill recently passed by the Senate.

For millennia, marriage has been recognized as the union of a husband and wife -- across all religious, cultural and geographical lines -- connecting children with both their mom and their dad. Marriage is rooted in a biological reality, not in bigotry or discrimination.

However we choose to address the needs of same-sex couples, we ought not attempt to redefine marriage, severing it from its role in giving children a lasting relationship with their own mother and father.

Just a couple of years ago, Washington adopted domestic partnerships, extending same-sex couples the rights and benefits of marriage. And by all accounts, domestic partnerships are working, despite the heated rhetoric from same-sex marriage advocates.

Redefining marriage impacts all of us. Already, we've seen religious groups denied property tax exemption because of their core religious beliefs about marriage. And if we redefine marriage, scholars and legal experts tell us that the conflicts will only increase.

All the people of Washington deserve the opportunity to be heard on marriage, not just a few dozen politicians. Marriage is too important to be pushed through with a narrow margin in a heated legislative debate.

I urge you to respect all your constituents. Please vote no on the same-sex marriage bill.
