CA High Court Rejects Suit Seeking to Strike Amendent from Ballot!

The California Supreme Court today unanimously rejected a lawsuit filed by marriage amendment opponents seeking to keep Proposition 8 off the November ballot. The lawsuit, filed June 19, sought to block the amendment from going before voters, alleging that it constituted a fundamental revision of the California Constitution, and thus required approval from 2/3 of the legislature. The court's unanimous ruling, without comment, rejected that claim, clearing the final roadblock to the amendment's appearance on the ballot in November.

1000 Pastors Call for 40 Days of Fasting for Marriage

"On Wednesday, [Pastor Jim] Garlow took a first step toward organizing clergy in the state, convening a conference call in which more than 1,000 ministers, most from evangelical congregations, discussed tactics for passing a fall ballot initiative that would amend California's Constitution to ban gay marriage. . . . The effort will include a 40-day fasting period leading up to election day, along with 100 days of prayer. On the weekend before the election, Garlow told the ministers, the goal would be to fill Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego and other amphitheaters with people praying for a ban on gay marriage."

CA Courts Force Same-Sex Marriage on Californians!

Stop Same-Sex Marriage in California!

PLEASE DONATE TODAY! The California Supreme Court just raised the stakes on the marriage amendment, declaring the 4.6 million Californians who voted for Prop 22 no better than racist bigots. This is precisely the scenario we've been preparing for over the past five months, but once again we need your help. Now, with 1.1 million signatures already submitted in support of the amendment, the future of marriage will soon be in the hands of California voters.

Now, more than ever, we need your help! CLICK HERE to donate. We have just one chance to reverse the Court's ruling. Already opponents have vowed to raise in excess of $15 million dollars to defeat the amendment. We need to raise at least $10 million to ensure that our opponents aren't able to erode the amendment's support.

With California the bellwether for the nation, we can't afford to lose. Victory will take determination and even sacrifice as well all pitch in.  Our opponents are few in number, but highly committed to their cause. That's the only way 2% of the population can defeat a 60% majority -- but it happened in Arizona in 2006 as opponents of the amendment used misinformation, confusion and a well-funded media campaign to defeat the Arizona amendment.

Your generous support is critical as we prepare our media plan and campaign budget for the fall. Please stand with us and donate today.

California Court Strikes Prop 22

Decision text here.

SAN FRANCISCO – The California Supreme Court released its decision today overturning Proposition 22, which had defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

“Thanks to the more than 1 million Californians who signed petitions, these out-of-touch judges will not have the last word on marriage,” says Brian Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage California (NOM-CA), “California voters will.”

NOM-CA is a San Diego-based “primarily formed ballot initiative committee,” under California law, which worked with Protect Marriage to get a state marriage amendment on the ballot. NOM-CA raised almost $1 million and helped collect over 1.1 million signatures to put a constitutional amendment before voters this November; the signatures submitted April 24th are awaiting certification by the California Secretary of States’ office.

“A state marriage amendment is the only way to put Prop 22 safely from the reach of activist judges who cannot tell the difference between marriage and bigotry,” said Brown, “We call on gay marriage advocates to halt the divisive and intolerant rhetoric which cruelly and falsely labels millions of Californians as ‘hate mongers’ because we support marriage as the union of husband and wife.”

California is the only court to follow Massachusetts’ lead in ordering same-sex marriage. Courts in New York, Washington and Maryland recently rejected arguments that marriage laws are discriminatory, and voters in 27 states including Oregon and Wisconsin have passed state constitutional amendments defining marriage as the union of husband and wife. State constitutional marriage amendments will be before the voters in both California and Florida this November.

“I’m very disappointed, but not surprised, that this divided and divisive California court chose the latest divisive PC-slogan over the 2000 years of human experience our marriage traditions represent,” said Brown, “We will take this fight for marriage to the people of California this November and we expect to win.”

Same-Sex Marriage Ruling Today!

The long-awaited California Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage is coming down today (5/15/2008) at 10 a.m. Pacific / 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

Will California's judges join courts in Maryland, Washington, New York and elsewhere and reject the claim that marriage is discrimination? Or will it say that even civil unions aren't good enough and try to impose same-sex marriage on one-third of the population of the U.S.?

Stay tuned, we'll know today. But whatever happens, we know this: The people of California will have a chance to support or overturn the court's decision on marriage this November, thanks to the help you've given us here at NOM (working with Protect Marriage) in California to get a state marriage amendment on the ballot this November. We'll keep you informed.

We Did It!!!

We reached our goal! As reported in the AP story below, working together with ProtectMarriage.com, we successfully collected 1.1 million signatures to put the California marriage amendment on the ballot in November. Today, those 1.1 million signatures were delivered to county elections officials across the state of California.

Many, many thanks to each of you who supported this effort, with your prayers, finances, and countless volunteer hours spent collecting signatures. This is your victory -- it wouldn't have happened without you!

But the campaign has only just begun. . . . Now that the amendment is successfully on the ballot, we need to quickly raise $10 million for a costly general election campaign. Can you stand with us again today? Every dollar raised will go directly into the campaign -- producing and airing the best radio and TV ads, reaching undecided voters with direct mail, and making sure our "get out the vote" efforts are fully funded for the fall.

Can you help us today? Your gift of $20, $50, $100 or even more would go a long way toward helping us hit the ground running in this next phase of the campaign.

Golden Moment: California Moves to Protect Marriage

NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE, by William C. Duncan, May 2, 2008.
"In March 2000, a California voter initiative defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The California Supreme Court is mulling a lawsuit challenging that definition, but a feisty new organization, the National Organization for Marriage, and allied state groups are opening a new front in the war — through a second voter initiative, they are trying to protect marriage in the California constitution. Last week, petitions were delivered to the California secretary of state to put the initiative on the November 2008 ballot."

NOM Launches NOM California!

California has a chance to enshrine the common-sense definition of marriage in its state constitution in November 2008 . . . but only if Californians come together and qualify a constitutional amendment by collecting 1.1 Million signatures by April. The California Marriage Amendment would add to the state constitution the same language as Proposition 22, which California voters overwhelmingly approved as a statute in 2000: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

In the face of an imminent California Supreme Court decision that could impose same-sex marriage on the Golden State, the National Organization for Marriage has focused its efforts on making sure that Californians have the chance to decide the future of marriage in November.

We have opened up a California office and are working alongside the www.protectmarriage.com coalition to fight for you!
