Help Stop SSM in Rhode Island! On May 7th, the Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee held a joint hearing to consider four bills, one of which would redefine marriage to include same-sex couples in Rhode Island. Two more bills would create divorce proceedings for same-sex couples married in Massachusetts -- even though the Rhode Island Supreme Court has already ruled those marriages are not recognized in Rhode Island law. Please help stop same-sex marriage in Rhode Island by sending an e-mail to the members of the House Judiciary Committee today! Click here to get started. Help Stop SSM from Being Legalized in New York! On June 19, 2007, the New York State Assembly passed Bill A-8590, a same-sex marriage bill that was introduced by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer. While the Senate version of the bill (S-5884) subsequently died, the bill is likely to pass the Assembly again in 2008. New York’s new governor, David Paterson, is an enthusiastic supporter of same-sex marriage. The New York State Senate has been, and continues to be, under intense pressure from same-sex marriage supporters to pass this legislation. It is vitally important that members of the New York State Senate hear from pro-family voters on this bill. Please take a few moments to e-mail your state senator to voice your support for traditional marriage and your opposition to Bill S-5884/A-8590 and Bill S-5994, another bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. Schwarzenegger Undermining Marriage: Let Him Know What You Think! On Friday, April 11th, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke at the annual convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, telling them that the California marriage amendment is a "waste of time," and promising his opposition to the amendment: "I will always be there to fight against that." Please take a few minutes to send Governor Schwarzenegger an e-mail, reminding him that efforts to protect marriage are never a waste of time, and urging him to reverse his position on the amendment. Support the Arizona Marriage Amendment!
With votes on the House and Senate versions of the Arizona marriage amendment expected in the near future, opponents have organized a campaign to dissuade legislators from supporting the amendment. Join the NOM Advocacy Center to reassure your Arizona legislators that their constituents support marriage. Make your voice heard today! Stop Bias at the San Diego Union-Tribune!
On March 15th, the San Diego Union-Tribune ran a biased story criticizing developer Douglas Manchester and others for contributing to the California Marriage Amendment. On March 19th, the Union-Tribune followed up with an even more biased selection of letters to the editor. Let the San Diego Union-Tribune know what you think about the California Marriage Amendment! To send a letter for publication in the Union-Tribune, join the NOM Advocacy Center.
On Tuesday, March 18, thanks in part to your emails and phone calls, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved SB 1250 on a 10-4 vote, sending the marriage amendment on to the Senate Appropriations Committee before going to the full Senate. Please help us contact the Appropriations Committee members in support of the marriage amendment. For several years, a grassroots coalition of Pennsylvanians has been working to put a marriage amendment on the statewide ballot for approval. Pennsylvania, like many of its neighbors to the northeast, requires legislative approval of all constitutional amendments. On Valentine’s Day of this year, seventeen state senators introduced SB1250, the Pennsylvania Marriage Protection Amendment, which must now be approved by the state senate and house in consecutive legislative sessions. SB1250 provides: “No union other than a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as marriage or the functional equivalent of marriage by the Commonwealth.” Pennsylvania legislators, particularly members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, need to hear from their constituents now. Your voice can make a difference! Even a handful of visits or a few dozen calls to a state legislative office can have a dramatic impact. Tell the eleven Massachusetts politicians who gave their word, only to betray marriage when it counted, that we need legislators who will defend marriage and keep their word. To e-mail these eleven Massachusetts politicians, join the NOM Advocacy Center.
New Jersey continues to be a national battleground in the same-sex marriage debate, as activists push new legislation which would recognize same-sex marriages in New Jersey. Simultaneously, the New Jersey Legislature will consider an amendment to the New Jersey Constitution that would define marriage as the union of a husband and wife, protecting marriage from redefinition in the legislature or the courts. E-mail your senator and state assemblymen urging them to oppose same-sex marriage and support a marriage amendment.
